The Sam Houston volleyball team begins its stretch run towards their fourth Southland Conference post-season tournament berth in the last five years as the Bearkats begin a five-game home stand this weekend.
The Kats play host to Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. Friday and Texas State-San Marcos at 4 p.m. Saturday. Next week, Sam Houston will close out the regular season with home matches Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The volleyball team enters the final two weeks of the regular season in fourth place in the Southland West with a 6-5 league mark. The Bearkats would be the No. 5 seed with their current record but hope closing out the season with five home matches can help them move up in the standings.
UTA comes into Friday's match with a 2-10 league mark, in fifth place in the SLC West. Texas State-San Marcos sports the best record in the Southland race, winning 11 of their 12 matches.
Junior Anna Ferguson leads the Bearkats this season with 275 kills (2.64 per match) and 81 blocks.
“Anna is doing a great job for us,” SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. “To come back from an injury as she has and put up such great numbers is fantastic. She's been a leader for us.”
Senior Haley Thomas has totaled 236 kills and freshman Carli Kolbe has added 204.
Sam Houston brings a two-match winning streak into Friday's contest. The Bearkats defeated Texas-San Antonio in three sets and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in four last weekend on the road.
The top eight finishers in the final regular season qualify for the conference post-season tournament. Central Arkansas is not eligible for post-season play. This year's post-season tournament will be hosted by Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.
