HUNTSVILLE ? Lydia Gonzales scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Sam Houston State women's basketball team to a 103-66 victory over Texas College Sunday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
The victory was the second for the Bearkats in two preseason exhibitions. Sam Houston opened their year with a win over the Houston Jaguars one week ago. SHSU was a year ago.
“These two exhibition victories are going to bring this team a bunch of confidence,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “We're really pleased with the way the veterans and the young players are coming together.”
Whitney Smith, Derneccia Livingston and Bre Agnew also scored in double figures. Smith had 18 points and seven rebounds. Livingston and Agnew added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Britni Martin, who joined the team a week ago after playing all fall with the Bearkat soccer team, also pulled down seven rebounds.
Mary Beth Renz scored eight points and Therese Hager and Ausha Hartley had six apiece.
Sam Houston never trailed, building a 53-31 halftime margin and leading by as many as 39 points.
The Bearkats totaled 62 of their 103 points in the paint. Sam Houston rebounded the Texas College Steers 63 to 27.
The women will play their first regular season home game Friday afternoon at 12 noon.
