EL PASO ? The UTEP Miners outscored Sam Houston State 25-11 in the final eight minutes to pick up an 83-72 non-conference men's basketball over the Bearkats Saturday night.
Lance Pevehouse scored 23 points to lead the Kats as Sam Houston State led most of the game. The Bearkats took a 9-8 lead six minutes into the contest on the first of five Pevehouse three point baskets.
Sam Houston built a 42-35 halftime lead and were up 52-41 with 16 minutes left to play after a pair of free throws by Ashton Mitchell.
Stefon Jackson, who led UTEP with 30 points, began to whittle the Bearkat lead away. Arnett Moultri's lay-up with 7:11 left finally put the Miners back in front 62-61. UTEP never let go of the lead the rest of the way.
Mitchell scored 15 points for Sam Houston. Ramirez and Corey Allmond each added 11 points. The Bearkats shot 46 percent from the field (25-of-55).
Randy Culpepper added 13 points for UTEP. The Miners were 27-of-63 from the field for 43 per cent. UTEP out-rebounded the Bearkats 42 to 32, scoring 27 second chance points.
UTEP upped its season mark to 5-3. The Bearkats now stand 2-5 for the season.
Sam Houston State returns home to Johnson Coliseum to face Texas College Tuesday and Jarvis Christian Saturday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
