Texas State-San Marcos used its size advantage to score inside as the Sam Houston women's team fell in a Southland Conference matchup 99-60 Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.

The Bobcats scored 40 points in the paint, 20 coming after offensive rebounds as Texas State-San Marcos out-boarded the Bearkats 48-27.

Three Sam Houston players scored in double figures as Whitney Smith totaled 12 points and Ausha Hartley and Lydia Gonzales added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gonzales led both teams with nine rebounds.

Sam Houston started well, scoring the first basket and trailing by only five points, 20-15, 11:30 before halftime on a basket by Britney Harris. The Bobcats, however, went on a 10-1 run before Sam Houston scored another field goal. Texas State-San Marcos led 42-24 at intermission.

The 60 points were the most by Sam Houston State in Southland Conference play since their 81-80 loss at Nicholls State. Other scoring for the Bearkats included Deltrice Daniel with eight points, Brittany Brooks with six, and Shlundria Texada with five.

The 99 points were the most ever by a Texas State-San Marcos women's basketball team in a Southland Conference game. The Bobcats were led by Joyce Ekworomadu with 20 points and Ashley Cole with 15.

Texas State-San Marcos upped its season record to 13-8. The Bobcats are 7-1 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston State is 1-19 for the year and 0-7 in league action.

Sam Houston State's women's team returns to Johnson Coliseum on Thursday, Feb. 7, to play host to Texas-San Antonio. Thursday will be 25 cent hot dog night at Johnson Coliseum
