
Bearkat women third after day one at indoors

HOUSTON ? With three runner-up performances in the field events and outstanding times in the running preliminaries, Sam Houston State's women stand in third place after six events on the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field championships.
The Bearkat women are the defending indoor champions. The event is being held at the Bill Yeoman Sports Center on the campus of the University of Houston.
Stephen F. Austin leads the women's standings after six events with 50 points. Texas State-San Marcos has 43.5 points and Sam Houston State 32.
Natalia Clark was the runner-up in the 20 pound weight throw with a toss of 60 feet, 3.255 inches. Dess Meek was runner-up in both the high jump with a mark of five feet, eight inches, and the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 10.75 inches.
In one of the few running events completed Friday night, Sam Houston State finished as runner-up in the distance medley relay. Whitney Rister, Ashley Casalini, Dakota Stewart, and Allison Ferries combined for a time of one minute, 17.45 seconds.
The Bearkats posted several outstanding times in the running prelims, setting themselves up for a run at the title in Saturday afternoon's finals.
Jessica Fisher was the fastest qualifier in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 7.51 seconds and was the second fastest in the 200 meter prelims at 24.77. Fisher is the defending Southland indoor champion in both events.
Tiffany Singleton was the fastest qualifier in the 400 meter dash at 56.12. Tiana Lee and Jordan Heggie are the two fastest qualifiers in the 60 meter hurdles with times of 8.67 and 8.73 seconds, respectively.
For the Sam Houston men, Travis Matthews posted a runner-up finish in the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 8.75 inches.
