Men's team takes second at CUSA championship

LYNCHBURG, VA. - Sam Houston took home second place at the men's Conference USA indoor track & field championship at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Virginia over the weekend.

The Kats tallied up 137.5 total points, placing them only behind Liberty for the men's championship. The women finished with 46.5 total points slotting them at seventh overall.

The weekend was kicked off in spectacular fashion for the Bearkats, as reigning CUSA freshman of the week Jayden Jones once again took home gold in the men's 200-meter dash with a 20.88 second run. Other Bearkats would not be too far behind Jones on the podium either, as Hendrick Hundl took home third place in the men's 60-meter hurdle with a 7.88 second run.

Turning to the field events, Jeremiah Jackson took home the silver medal in the men's high jump with a 2.04 meter jump. Derrick Warren Jr. would also take home second in the men's long jump with a 7.35 meter jump. Another freshman would be on the podium for the Kats as Dominykas Cepys took home silver in the men's shot put with a 16.64 meter throw.

Perhaps the highlight of the weekend though was the men's pole vault, where Sam Houston would find themselves with the top two spots at the event. Ryan Olguin and Benjamin Carlie placed first and second respectively at the event, both with a 5.08 meter vault.

On the women's side, Rajer Gurode would get the Kats on the podium first with a third place finish at the women's 60-meter dash, turning in a 7.41 second run. Soon after, Jackeria Woodkins would take home gold at the women's 400-meter dash with a 54.38 second run, only .05 seconds in front of second place. Sam Houston also finished third at the women's 4x400 meter relay with a 3:47.39 minute run.
