Bearkat baseball blasts Cardinals 18-7

EDINBURG ? Bobby Verbick tied a Sam Houston State school record with three home runs to lead the Bearkats to an 18-7 victory over Lamar on the second day of the Texas-Pan American Classic.

 

The Bearkats posted 21 hits with six Sam Houston players having multiple hit days.

 

Nick Zaleski was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Verbick, Heath Pugh, Keith Stein, and Braeden Riley each had three hits.  Seth Hammock had two hits.

 

Justin Jackson was the winning pitcher for Sam Houston in relief. Brent Powers worked the first four and two thirds innings. Jackson tossed two and a third innings. Zac Baker and Adam Albright pitched the final two frames.

 

Sam Houston started the scoring with five runs in the second inning and had four runs in the fifth.

 

Hammond also had a home run for the Bearkats. Stein hit a triple and a double. Todd Sebek and Zaleski each had doubles.

 

Sam Houston State will play two games Sunday afternoon to complete action at the UTPA tournament.

 

Three other players have homered three times in a game for the Bearkats, with Lou Ferrell doing it last in 2001.
