Houston ? Led by Jessica Fisher, who won the 60 and 200 meter dash titles for the second year in a row and was part of the winning 4x400 relay, the Sam Houston women won the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field team championship for the second year in a row Saturday.
Sam Houston State totaled 138 points, three more than they did in winning the 2007 indoor meet. Runner-up Stephen F. Austin finished 24 points behind with 114.
“We never come into a conference meet as the prohibitive favorite before,” Head Coach Curtis Collier. “Being the defending champion and everyone knowing you're supposed to win is a little bit different for us mentally, but the girls handled the pressure very well. We did what we was supposed to do.”
The meet was held at the Bill Yeoman Sports Center on the campus of the University of Houston. Sam Houston State was in third place going into the running finals Saturday, but dominated the competition all afternoon.
Fisher won the 60 meters with a time of 7.55 seconds and the 200 with a mark of 24.67. Fisher, Monika May, Desiree Taylor, and Tiffany Singleton team to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:46.98.
“Jessica Fisher is as steady as they come,” Collier said. “She had a little more competition this year, so she didn't dominate her races like she did last year, but she performed well and crossed the finish line first.”
Jordan Heggie, Tiana Lee, and Tywanisha Spiller finished first, second, and sixth respectively in the 60 meter hurdles. Heggie ran the race in 8.65 seconds, Lee in 8.66, and Spilled in 9.00 flat.
Dakota Stewart was third in the 800 meters with a 2:17.13 clocking.
Singleton and Taylor placed fourth and sixth, respectively in the 400 meter dash with times of 56.32 and 56.85 seconds.
Allison Ferries and Whitney Rister placed fourth and sixth in the 3000 meter run with times of 10:18.34 and 10:19.40, respectively.
Kendall Bass, Christian Webb, Ebonee Stephens, and Mallory Adams finished fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth in the shot put. Bass threw 44-2.75, Webb 41-1.25, Stephens 43-0.25, and Adams 36-9.5.
Dess Meek finished second in both the long jump (18-10.75) and the high jump (5-8) and was eighth in the triple jump (37-6). Natalia Clark was the runner-up in the shot (60-3.25). The women's distance medley relay placed second with a time of 12:17.45.
