HOUSTON -- Sam Houston State's women's sprinters and throwers led the Bearkat track and field team with outstanding performances in the Houston Indoor Invitational at the Bill Yeoman Sports Center on the University of Houston campus Friday and Saturday. The meet was the second of the 2008 indoor track and field season.
Jessica Fisher won the 200 meters with a time of 24.85 seconds. She was third in the 60 meter dash behind two runners from the University of Texas with a mark of 7.53 seconds. Three other Bearkat women placed among the top 10 in the 60 meter dash with Desiree Taylor fourth, Tiana Lee fifth, and Regina Offord sixth.
Tiffany Singleton was the runner-up in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.09 seconds. Sam Houston State won the 4x400 relay with a clocking of three minutes, 48.22 seconds.
Natalia Clark won the women's weight throw, tossing the 20-pound weight 59 feet, 4.75 inches. Three other Bearkats finished among the top 10 in the event with Kendall Bass placing fifth, Kim Olison eighth, and Christina Webb ninth.
“Natalia defeated the current Southland Conference leader in the weight throw with a school record performance,” SHSU Head Coach Curtis Collier said. “Her record mark came on her last throw of the competition.”
Tiana Lee was the second highest intercollegiate performer in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.62 seconds.
Dess Meek was the second highest intercollegiate competitor in the long jump with a mark of 18' 9.25" and the third best collegian in the high jump, leaping 5 feet, six inches.
