HUNTSVILLE ? Onika Anderson scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead UTSA to a 72-48 Southland Conference women's basketball victory over Sam Houston State at Johnson Coliseum Thursday night.
UTSA (14-6, SLC 6-1) took advantage of their size to out-rebound Sam Houston State (1-20, SLC 0-8) 57 to 40. The Roadrunners scored 27 of their 72 points in the paint.
Whitney Smith led Sam Houston with 15 points. Brittany Brooks added 11. Ryba Pawlaczyk led the game with 12 rebounds. Lydia Gonzales pulled down 10 boards for Sam Houston.
The game was tied one, 7-7, seven minutes into the game after a lay-up by Gonzales. Sam Houston went the next seven minutes without a field goal as UTSA went on a 22-1 run to build their lead to 21, 29-8, on a three-point basket by Amanda Foster.
Sam Houston bounced back to close the first half with a 14-5 run to cut the margin at intermission to 34-22.
But the Bearkats went cold again as UTSA opened the second half with a 18-4 run to go up 56-26 at the 13:05 mark on a three point basket by Terrie Davis.
Sam Houston State never came closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
The Roadrunners hit 24-of-66 from the field (.364) while Sam Houston was successful on 18-of-61 shots (.295).
Sam Houston State hits the road, traveling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a 7 p.m. game Saturday night.
