Michael Courtney, Chris Cralle set school records

Although Sam Houston State's first outdoor meet of the 2008 season, the Meredith York Relays, was canceled due to bad weather, several Bearkat track and field athletes had a successful week.
Michael Courtney set a new Sam Houston indoor school record of 47.36 in the 400 meters at a last chance meet at the University of Arkansas. Courtney did not qualify for the NCAA meet but ran his best indoor time ever by nine tenths of a second.
Chris Cralle set a new school record outdoors in the men's hammer, throwing 190-3 at a meet at Texas State-San Marcos. This mark is an NCAA Region qualifying standard. He also threw 177-7 in the discus, a 10 foot personal best which also is an NCAA Region qualifying mark. Additionally, Jon Tipton threw 159-10 in the discus.
Even with the snow, the decathlon competition at the York relays was completed. Aaron Harlan of Stephen F. Austin won the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 7141. Second was Phillip Adam of Rice at 6862. Others: Chris Jones, SFA, 5850; Dean Laing, TAMU-Commerce, 5389; Connor Hayes, Rice, 5278.
