Softball tops Islanders 4-1 to earn series victory

CORPUS CHRISTI ? Morgan Mikulin and Hailey Wiginton each hit RBI doubles to power Sam Houston State to a 4-1 Southland Conference softball victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon.

The victory evened Sam Houston State's season record at 15-15 and gives the Bearkats a 6-3 mark in Southland Conference play. The Kats took 2-of-3 from the Islanders in the weekend series after splitting Saturday.

Mikulin led the Kats both at the plate and in the circle. She went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and gave up only four hits and an unearned run in a complete game seven inning effort.

Amy Brown started the game with a lead-off double and scored on Mikulin's double to put SHSU up 1-0 after the first half inning. The Bearkats added three more runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Mikulin, an RBI on a ground out by Casie Everitt, and Wiginton's run-scoring double.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored their only run of the contest on an error in the bottom of the third.

Sam Houston State returns to Huntsville Tuesday to begin a two-day, three-game Southland series with McNeese State at Bearkat Softball Stadium. The contests mark the Bearkats' first home games in nearly a month.
