Men post strong marks in Austin outdoor meet

AUSTIN -- Led by first place finishes by Michael Courtney in the 400 meters and Chris Cralle in the hammer, the Sam Houston State men's track and field team started the 2008 outdoor season with outstanding performances at the University of Texas Longhorn Invitational Saturday.
Courtney won the 400 meters with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 46.79 seconds. Cralle took the hammer title with a throw of 189 feet, four inches. Cralle also was fourth in the discus with a toss of 169 feet, four inches.
Taylor Ray was third in the 1500 meters with a clocking of 3:56.99. Ray also was seventh in the 3000 meters with a mark of 8:52.60. Lane Dennis placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in 52.35 seconds. Jon Tipton was fifth in the discus (169' 4") and ninth in the hammer (157' 9").
Kevin Houston was sixth in the 100 meter dash (11.15), Jay Newman sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (54.66), John Thomas eighth in the 110 meter hurdles (14.50), and Travis Matthews seventh in the pole vault (16' 0.75").
