Sam Houston State lost a slugfest to Dallas Baptist 9-8 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday night at Patriot Field. The Patriots, who had 13 hits, improved their record to 13-8, while SHSU, who had 15 hits, fell to 13-9.
The Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Sophomore Ryan Goins hit a double to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Sophomore Ryan Thompson. Junior Clay Kelly then walked to bring up Sophomore Ryan Enos, who hit a three run home run to left center field. Sophomore Austin Knight then doubled down the left field line and scored the fifth run of the inning on single by Junior Evan Bigley.
The Bearkats cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning when Keith Stein hit a three run home run over the left field wall. They scored their fourth run on three consecutive singles by Bobby Verbick, Mark Wyatt, and Ryan Trevino.
Goins extended the Patriots lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run to left field.
SHSU scored one run in the top of the sixth inning on one hit, a walk, and hit batsman to make the score 6-5.
The Bearkats took the lead from the Patriots in the top of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Ryan Weber then hit a double to left field which allowed two runs to score and give SHSU at 7-6 lead.
DBU answered the Bearkats two runs in the top of the seventh with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Goins led off with a double and then pinch hitter Freshman Jason Krizan, hit a two run home run to right center field.
SHSU tied the score in the top of the ninth inning when they started the inning off an infield single, advanced the base runner into scoring position on sacrifice bunt, and then a single up the middle allowed the tying run to score.
The Patriots answered the call once again in the bottom of the ninth after Goins doubled down the right field line and pinch hitter Senior Drew Pirtle drove him in on a walk off RBI single to center field.
Picking up the victory for the Patriots was Senior Tyson Bagley, who pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run, on three hits, and striking out three.
Sam Houston State returns to Huntsville Wednesday as the Bearkats play host to Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
