SAN ANTONIO -- Whitney Smith scored 16 points and Lydia Gonzales added 14 as the Sam Houston State women's basketball team fell to Texas-San Antonio 76-51 Thursday at the Convocation Center.
The Bearkats got off to hot start, hitting eight of their first 10 shots. But Sam Houston went cold from the floor, making only two of their final 26 shots in the period to fall 17 points behind at intermission.
Sam Houston rallied to cut the margin to 10 points, 48-38, on a free throw by Gonzales with 12 minutes to play. UTSA bounced back for a 20-9 run to put the game out of reach.
Texas-San Antonio continued in their effort to nail down the number two seed in the Southland Conference post-season tournament in Katy next week. Texas State-San Marcos will be the Southlands top-seeded women's team in the event.
Sam Houston State will close out the 2008 season with a home game Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Bearkats play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Johnson Coliseum. Senior Day ceremonies before the game will honor SHSU's two women's senior players, Britney Harris and LaToya Bennett.
