Softball splits doubleheader with Sugar Bears

HUNTSVILLE ? Despite giving up only four hits in two seven-inning games, all the Sam Houston State softball team got was a split in a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bearkat Softball Stadium.

Sam Houston (26-21, SLC 11-9) won the first game 6-0, but fell 1-0 to Central Arkansas (3-32, SLC 1-18) in the nightcap. The victory mark the Sugar Bears' first in Southland Conference action this season.

Centerfield Hailey Wiginton went 4-for-4 to lead the Bearkats in the first game as Sam Houston State totaled 13 hits. Wigington, Casie Everitt, Morgam Mikulin, and Amy Brown started the contest with four consecutive singles to put SHSU up 2-0.

Sam Houston added three runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth.

Brandi Crnkovic (12-12) gave up only two hits in seven innings to get the victory in the circle. She struck out nine batters.

Kayla Hitchcock ended Crnkovic's hitless streak at 11 innings with a single down the right field line in the fourth inning. Crnkovic threw a 5-inning no-hitter Tuesday against Texas Southern and a 7-inning hitless game Wednesday against Houston Baptist.

Morgan Mikulin (14-9) gave up only two hits to the 24 batters she faced in the nightcap. But the first hit was a home run by leadoff hitter Sarah Garcia in the opening inning.

Neither team scored the rest of the way. Central Arkansas produced only three base runners during the remainder of the contest. With two out and Casie Everitt on second base in the fifth inning, Wiginton singled to left field and Everitt was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game.

Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas will meet at 12 noon Sunday in the third game of the series.
