HOUSTON ? Seth Hammock went 4-for-5 at the plate including two home runs to lead Sam Houston State to a 15-7 non-conference baseball victory over Texas Southern Tuesday afternoon.
Heath Pugh, Keith Stein, and Nick Zaleski also hit home runs for the Bearkats as Sam Houston State upped its season mark to 22-13. Sam Houston State totaled 16 hits for the contest.
The five home runs in the victory over the Tigers set a Sam Houston State school record. Seven times in the past, SHSU baseball teams have totaled four home runs in a contest, the last in 2005 in a road game at Louisiana-Monroe.
Hammock had a solo homer in the second inning and a 2-RBI home run in the seventh. Pugh's solo shot came in the ninth inning and Zaleski's in the fifth. Stein had a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Spencer Parrish (3-0) was the game winner, allowing Texas Southern only two hits in three and a third innings. Cody Springer started the game and gave up three unearned runs to the Tigers in the bottom of the first.
Stephen Price, Jon Lindenberger, and Casey Springer also pitched in relief.
Down 3-0, Sam Houston started its scoring with a run in the fourth inning and added four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Sam Houston State continues non-conference action Wednesday night with a road game against the University of Houston Cougars. The Bearkats will host McNeese State in a three-game Southland Conference series beginning Friday at Don Sanders Stadium.
