Texas sweeps softball 2-1, 4-0

AUSTIN ? Hailey Wiginton hit a home run in the third inning to give Sam Houston State its only run in a 2-1 non-conference softball loss to the University of Texas in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday evening.

 

The Longhorns earned a doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

 

Kori Cook blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning for the winning run in the first game. Longhorn pitcher Meagan Denny gave up five hits to the Bearkats while striking out 16 Sam Houston batters.

 

Wiginton went 2-for-3 at the plate with her home run and a single. Tanya Hooser, Sarah Parich, and Casie Everitt also had hits. Morgan Mikulin (14-10) pitched for the Bearkats, limiting Texas to seven hits while striking out three batters.

 

The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead on a Desiree Williams two-run single in the second inning. Texas added runs in the third and fifth innings.

 

Brandi Crnkovic drew the loss for the Kats, giving up five hits in six innings and striking out eight batters.

 

Lauren Burns had two hits and Wiginton, Parich and Hooser each added another as Texas pitcher Britney Barnhill gave up five hits while striking out nine Bearkats.

 

Hailey Wiginton produced Sam Houston's first hit in the third inning and Lauren Burns added two more.

 

Texas now owns a 22-16-2 overall record while Sam Houston dropped to 26-24. The Bearkats return to Southland Conference action Saturday as they begin a three-game series with Nicholls State at 2 p.m. at Bearkat Softball Stadium.
