HUNTSVILLE ? Keith Stein hit a double and a two-run home run to power Sam Houston State to a nine-run first inning as the Bearkats defeated Prairie View A&M 14-7 in a non-conference baseball game at Don Sanders Stadium Wednesday night.
The victory upped Sam Houston to 16-11 for the season while the Panthers dropped to 13-16. The Bearkats out-hit the Panthers 14-9.
The Bearkats scored their nine runs in the bottom of the first on six hits. Sam Houston added a run in the third but Prairie View kept pace with a run in the first, three in the second, and solo runs in the third and fifth to cut the margin to four, 10-6.
Sam Houston posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 13-6.
Todd Sebek, who went 4-for-6 for the night with two doubles and 3 RBIs, added another run with a single in the eighth inning.
Bobby Verbick had a triple for Sam Houston as well.
Brent Powers and Justin Jackson each pitched two innings to start the contest. Stephen Price, Guillaume Duguay, Jon Lindenberger, Adam Albright, and Matt Shelton followed to complete the game. Powers (1-1) was credited with the victory.
Prairie View added a final run in the top of the ninth. Greg Ford had a double and Brandon Kendricks hit a triple for Prairie View.
Starting pitcher Adrian Canales (0-1) took the loss for Prairie View. Mark Almaguer, Jose Mata, Terry Salter, Conrad Limas, Jonathan Arnic, Robert Ponce, and Fernando Almaguer all worked in relief.
Sam Houston State returns to Southland Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Texas-Arlington. The Bearkat-Mavericks series begins Friday at 6:30 p.m.
