HAMMOND, LA ? Morgan Mikulin hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the score, then had one of three RBIs in the 10th winning to lead Sam Houston State to an 8-5 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the first game of a Southland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at North Oak Park.
Southeastern Louisiana came back to win Saturday's nightcap 4-0 for a split in the doubleheader.
The Lions edged Sam Houston State 2-1 Sunday to end up taking two of the three games in the series.
Mikulin also earned the pitching victory in the first game, limiting the Lions to two hits in the final six innings.
Mikulin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Amy Brown was 2-for-5 with two RBIs as well. Hailey Wiginton and Janaye Richardson both drove in runs on singles in the top of the 10th inning as Sam Houston broke open the tie with five runs on three hits and two Lion errors.
The Bearkats totaled their eight runs on eight hits. Southeastern Louisiana also totaled eight hits and took advantage of four Sam Houston errors.
Brown gave Sam Houston a 2-0 advantage with a home run in the first inning. The Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and another run in the fifth to go up 3-2 before Mikulin tied the game with her home run.
Brandi Crnkovic started the game in the circle for Sam Houston, spreading six hits over four innings and striking out four batters.
Crnkovic (9-12) was the losing pitcher in the second game despite striking out seven Lion batters. Southeastern Louisiana scored its four runs on seven hits.
The Lions scored a run in both the second and fourth innings on RBI singles by Katy Duhe and Blanche Lockhart. Katy Lyman hit a two run homer in the sixth.
A walk-off two run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Southeastern Louisiana a 2-1 victory over Sam Houston State Sunday and a victory with two wins in the three game Southland Conference series.
Amy Brown accounted for the only Sam Houston State run in Sunday's third game. Hailey Wiginton singled to start the game and scored on a double by Brown.
Rachel Ray allowed the Bearkats only one more hit the rest of the game as Sam Houston State had only one base runner, Krystal Gay, reach second base the rest of the game. Gay walked and was sacrificed to second.
Morgan Mikulin picked up the loss in the circle.
Sam Houston State now stands 21-20 for the season and 10-8 in Southland action, Southeastern Louisiana is 24-13 for the year and 11-9 in league play.
