Brandi Crnkovic no hits Texas Southern

HUNTSVILLE ? Brandi Crnkovic faced just 16 batters in five innings as she threw a no-hitter to shut out Texas Southern 11-0 as Sam Houston State won the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Bearkat softball complex.

 

Courtney Lewis hit a two-run home run in the second game for Texas Southern as Sam Houston won 4-2 to sweep the doubleheader.

 

The no-hitter in the first game was the second this season for  Crnkovic and the third in her three-year career at Sam Houston. She no-hit Prairie View A&M in the 2008 season opener (a perfect game) and in 2007. Crnkovic upped her record to 10-12.

 

Sam Houston State scored its 11 runs on nine hits and four Tiger errors. Tanya Hooser led Sam Houston at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. Amy Brown, Tiffani Woodrum, and Amanda Lindsey each added doubles for the Bearkats.

 

Lindsey brought in two runs with her double. Morgan Mikulin, Lauren Burns, Kendra Spivey, and Sarah Parich each had one RBI for the Kats.

 

In the nightcap, Sam Houston scored its four runs on 11 hits and one Tiger error. Morgan Mikulin upped her record in the circle to 13-8 with the victory.

 

Ashley Nelson and Tanya Hooser each had RBI singles and Sam Houston scored another run on a TSU error to give the Bearkats a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mikulin retired the first eight batters she faced before giving up a hit in the third inning.

 

Lewis hit her home run in the top of the fourth inning in the second game for Texas Southern's first tally of the doubleheader.

 

Amanda Lindsey and Janaye Richardson both singled to start the fourth inning. Alex Survant, running for Lindsey, scored on a passed ball to up the Kat lead to 4-2.

 

Sam Houston upped its season record to 23-20 while Texas Southern fell to 7-16. The Bearkats play host to Houston Baptist in another non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bearkat Softball Stadium
