LINCOLN, NEBRASKA ? Chris Cralle placed sixth in the men's hammer with a throw of 203 feet, seven inches. Cralle was 10th in the discus (164 feet, three inches). His teammate, Jon Tipton, threw the discus 170 feet one inch to finish seventh.
The men's 4x400 relay consisting of Jay Newman, Lane Dennis, George Whitney and Michael Courtney placed 11th with a mark of 3:09.10.
None of the Bearkats qualified for the NCAA nationals in the first day, but most of the Sam Houston competitors improved their regional positions.
"Only five percent of the competitors in the meet actually improved on their season bests," SHSU head coach Curtis Collier said. "I looked at our placings and, in almost every case, our kids were one or two better than our rankings in the region coming into the meet."
The top five individuals from each regional and the top three relay teams automatically advance to the NCAA national meet to be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, IA.
