Dess Meek wins NCAA Regional gold

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA ? Dess Meek won the gold medal in the high jump at the NCAA Division I regional championships Saturday to earn a spot in the national championships in Des Moines, IA, June 11-14.
Meek cleared 5 feet, 11.5 inches on her second attempt to earn the title. Epley Bullock of Nebraska finished as runner-up, clearing 5 feet, 11.5 inches on her third attempt. Both missed on all three of their tries at the next height.
"This is very exciting," Meek said. "I just tried my hardest. I don't think it has hit me yet."
Clearing the winning height on her second attempt, Meek had to sit back and watch the rest of the remaining jumps make their attempts.
"I was really nervous the whole time," Meek said. "Right after I jumped, I was excited. My family was there and they were definitely excited too."
Assistant coach David Self also was pleased.
"We knew Dess would compete well in the high jump, but we just thought she would have a better chance in the long jump," Self said. "Dess really exceeded our expectations."
In other action for the Bearkat women at NCAA regionals, the women's 4x400 relay placed seventh as Tiffany Singleton, Jessica Fisher, Monika May and Des Taylor combined for a time of 3:37.94.
Kendall Bass placed 25th in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 1.5 inches.
Jessica Fisher was 18th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.92. Tiana Lee placed 9th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.57) and 13th in the 100 meter hurdles (13.97).
