HOUSTON -- The Texas Longhorns scored 12 runs in the first two innings, including nine in the second to knock off the Sam Houston State 13-3 in the first elimination game of the Houston Regional.
Ryan Tepera got the start for the Bearkats (37-25) on the hill and lasted just an inning and a third giving up seven hits and six runs.
The Kats used six pitchers in the ballgame, with Zach Neal going 4 2/3 allowing seven hits and three runs. Matt Shelton, Adam Albright and Zac Baker each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game.
Keith Stein was the leader at the plate for the Bearkats. He had two of the team's nine hits and drove in two runs. Ryan Trevino and Ryan Weber each had two hits as well for the Kats.
Seth Hammock drove in the other run for SHSU while Braeden Riley, Ryan Weber and Mark Wyatt all scored for the Bearkats.
The Longhorns (38-21) finished the game with 17 hits and hit three home runs in the game.
"Obviously, it was a tough day for the Bearkats, giving up a 12 spot in the first two innings," SHSU head coach Mark Johnson said. "It makes it a lot tougher in a game when you lose your short game and other stuff when it gets away from you that much.
"We just didn't match up early. We went through quite a few pitchers and put up some goose eggs as we got going. It was tough to make a comeback."
Todd Sebek was named to the All-Tournament team follwing Rice's win over Texas to win the regional on Sunday.
