Chris Cralle wins hammer, discus at Houston

HOUSTON ? Chris Cralle won both the discus and the hammer throws to highlight action for the Sam Houston State men's track and field team at the Houston Invitational Saturday, hosted by the University of Houston.
The meet was the final outing for the Bearkats in preparation for next week's Southland Conference Track and Field Championships to be held Friday through Sunday at Sam Houston State's York Track and Field Center and Bowers Stadium.
"This was a great tune-up meet for us before next week's Southland
Conference Outdoor Championships” Head Coach Curtis Collier said. “We went into the meet with the objectives of improving our best performance marks, tuning up for the championship season, and staying healthy so we can give ourselves the best possible chance to perform at our best next weekend. We ended up with 13 season bests."
In the discus, Cralle threw 180-0 which ranks him third in the Southland and 7th in the NCAA Midwest Region. In the hammer, he threw more than 200 feet for the third meet in a row, winning with a toss of 200-1.
Cralle leads the Southland Conference and is currently 6th in the
NCAA Midwest Region.
Other men's NCAA Region meet qualifiers at the meet were freshman Jay
Newman in the 400 Hurdles (52.34); reshirt junior Jon Tipton in the Discus
(173-6); and the 4x100 relay of Kevin Houston, Darryl Hayes, Michael
Courtney, and Lane Dennis (40.61). This gives the men's team 8 qualifiers
in 8 events to this point in the season. Other outstanding performances
for the men included redshirt junior Chris Nelson in the HIgh Jump
(6-8.75) and freshman Scottie Jones in the 110 Hurdles (14.31).
