Sam Houston baseball players Bobby Verbick, Todd Sebek, and Keith Stein have received addition honors following the Bearkats' successful 2008 season.
Verbick and Stein were two of 32 players named to the 2008 NCAA Division I South Central All-Region Team.
The South Central region consists of NCAA Division I teams from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida.
Verbick and Sebek also were named as first team selections on the 2008 Southland Conference Academic All-League team.
Verbick, Stein, and Sebek combined to lead Sam Houston State to the NCAA Division I playoffs for the second consecutive season and the sixth time in school history. The Bearkats swept unbeaten through the Southland Conference post-season tournament held at Don Sanders Stadium. Sam Houston defeated No. 2 seed Lamar 15-7 in the finals.
In the NCAA Regionals in Houston, the Kats battled No. 1 seed Rice to the last out, falling 3-2.
Verbick, Stein, and Sebek led Sam Houston to 40 victories in 2007 and 37 in 2008. Those 77 victories represent the most wins by a Bearkat team in consecutive seasons since SHSU won 45 and 44 games in 1986 and 1987.
The 2008 Bearkats set both school and Southland Conference records with a team batting average of .335 and 457 RBIs.
Sebek hit .357, Stein .354, and Verbick .351 for the 2008 season. Verbick led the Bearkats with 14 home runs. Stein produced 10 home runs.
To earn first team Academic All-Southland honors, Sebek posted a 3.73 grade point average majoring in business. Verbick produced a 3.35 grade point average as a kinesiology major.
