Peterson selected by Marlins in MLB Draft

PHILADELPHIA – Sam Houston pitcher Ryan Peterson was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 71st  overall pick of the MLB Draft on Saturday.Â
Peterson was projected as one of the top college arms available for this year's draft, coming off a breakthrough season which saw him earn first team All-CUSA honors. Â
His selection came during the Competitive Balance B round, making him the highest-selected Bearkat pitcher since 1984 when Kevin Renz was taken 54th overall by the Detroit Tigers. He is the fourth Bearkat to be selected within the first four rounds of the draft since 2021. Â
The Shiner native put together one of the best pitching seasons in Bearkat history, finishing with 105 strikeouts, making him the sixth SHSU pitcher in program history to surpass the century mark in punchouts in a single season and only the 10th to rack up 200 in a career. Â
Peterson added a 3.38 ERA and a .236 opponent's batting average to his ledger in 2026 and was named to numerous national watch lists including National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation, and midyear Pitcher of the Year watch lists by both Baseball America and Perfect Game. Â
He hit double-digit strikeouts twice this year against UIC and Oklahoma State and was named CUSA's Pitcher of the Week on March 27 after throwing a complete-game, 1-hit shutout against WKU. It was the first complete-game shutout by a Bearkat since 2017.
