Soccer wins third straight over South Alabama

HUNTSVILLE ? Raquel Bueno, Luana Miessa and Brittnay Foerstner each scored a goal as Sam Houston State defeated South Alabama 3-0 in an NCAA Division I women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.

The victory extended Sam Houston State's winning streak to three matches, a school record for the six-year program. The win also upped the Bearkats' 2008 season mark to 3-2, the best start in the history of the program.

“The girls are playing with a lot of confidence now. We're going to produce a lot more bests if we keep playing like this,” SHSU head coach Tom Brown said.

The Bearkats struck quickly as Bueno right-footed in a goal on a pass from Miessa just 2:03 into the contest. The score was the fourth earliest goal in the Sam Houston women's soccer match.

Miessa scored the second goal at the 25:36 mark on a pass from Bueno. Foerstner added the third goal at 61:08 in the second period off a ball from Britni Martin.

“We came out wanting to pressure them immediately and it paid off with an early goal,” Brown said. “Up by three in the second half, we started trying to force the game wide and keep the ball out of the middle.”

Each of the three Bearkat match wins have been shutouts, also setting a school mark for longest time not allowing a goal.

Goalkeeper Jenny Pence was credited with eight saves as she faced 13 South Alabama shots. Sam Houston State took 14 shots with Miessa leading the offense with seven.

South Alabama drops to 1-4 for the season. The Jaguars came into the contest with a 15-3-1 all-time record against the Southland Conference in soccer.

“This is a quality win for us,” Brown said. “The girls are working hard and improving every match.”

Sam Houston State will seek to extend its streak when the Bearkats play again on Friday, Sept. 19 as they host Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
