Soccer team earns national academic honor

The Sam Houston State women's soccer team is one of 267 women's programs across the nation that has been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as an NSCAA/addidas Women's Team Academic Award winner.
Brittany Foerstner, a senior defender for the Bearkats from Garland, Texas, has been recognized as an NSCAA Academic All-America honorable mention selection.
To earn recognition as a Team Academic Award winner, a squad must produce a overall team grade point average of 3.00 or better. The list includes teams from NCAA Divisions I, II and III plus NAIA universities and colleges.
Sam Houston State boasted a 3.20 team grade point average. The Bearkats are one of only two teams from the Southland Conference to make the NSCAA list. The other was Texas-San Antonio which produced a 3.10 team GPA.
An education major with a 3.67 overall grade point average, Foerstner played in 60 games during her four seasons as a Bearkat. She was a three-time Academic All-Southland Conference honorable mention selection.
Foerstner started 15 matches during the 2008 season, helping lead the Bearkats to their best record, nine victories and seven losses, in the six-year history of the program. She also was part of a Sam Houston defense that produced a school record eight shutouts including seven shutouts in a row.
“This is a terrific honor for the Sam Houston State women's soccer program,” SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. “It's exciting to see our student-athletes achieve both on the playing field and in the class room.”
