Anna Ferguson, Kaylee Hawkins earn SLC honors again

Sam Houston State senior Anna Ferguson and freshman Kaylee Hawkins were named the offensive and defensive players of the week respectively by vote of the league's sports information directors.
The Bearkats, winners of their last nine consecutive matches, swept the weekly awards previously on October 5 giving Sam Houston five of the last eight Southland volleyball player of the week awards.
Ferguson and Hawkins each receives their second award of the season and are the first Bearkats to win two player of the week awards in a single season since Cynthia Yarotsky in 2007.
Ferguson, a native of Dallas, Texas, led Sam Houston in kills as the Bearkats twice fought off match points to come from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat both Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State in five sets. The win over SFA is only the 2nd in the last 14 matches against the Ladyjacks.
The victories extended Sam Houston's winning streak to nine matches, its longest since 1994, and the Kats' 9-1 conference start is their best as a Southland member.
Hawkins, a native of Dickinson, Texas, is the only Southland player with over 40 digs in a match this season and set a new league season-high in addition to breaking the school record with 44 digs in the win against McNeese State.
Hawkins, the Kats team leader in digs, ranks third overall in conference with 367 and ranks fifth with 3.90 digs per set.
Sam Houston State wraps up the home portion of its 2009 regular season schedule with matches Thursday and Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats will play host to UTSA at 7 p.m. Thursday night and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 2 p.m.
Sam Houston will close out the regular season with road matches at UT-Arlington, Texas State and Central Arkansas. The 2009 Southland Conference post-season tournament to decide the league's NCAA national tournament representative will be held in San Antonio Nov. 19-21.
