HUNTSVILLE - Junior center Gilberto Clavell scored 19 points and senior guard Corey Allmond added 13 to lead Sam Houston State to a 91-54 non-conference men's basketball victory over Texas College Monday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Dwayne Johnson led Texas (3-2) with 11 points. Ashton Mitchell added 12 points and five assists for Sam Houston (2-0).
The Bearkats led from wire-to-wire, building a 47-26 halftime margin and leading by as many as 45 points in the second half.
Sam Houston hit 56.3 percent from the field (38-of-65) and out-rebounded the Steers 40-26.
Antuan Bootle led the Bearkats on the boards with seven rebounds. Arthur Zulu pulled down five and Josten Crow, Allmond and Aaron Thompson had four each.
The Bearkat defense forced 23 Steer turnovers with Mitchell, Crow and Drae Murray each grabbing three steals.
Following Monday night's game, Sam Houston takes to the road for the Cancun Classic. The Bearkats will play at Kentucky on Thursday night and at Cleveland State Saturday. Sam Houston will play two games in Cancun, Mexico, during Thanksgiving week.
The next home game for Sam Houston will be a duel with Mid-America Christian Monday, Dec. 30 at 5:30 pm. Attending the contest can help Sam Houston students earn a free T-Shirt.
The first 500 SHSU students to attend any combination of three home men's or women's basketball games will win a Bearkat basketball t-shirt courtesy of Student Activities and Bearkat Athletics.
Attendees will be tracked via the BearkatOneCard. For the purposes of the promotion, the men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Monday, November 30, will count as one event only. Sam Students receive free admission to BEarkat home games on presentation of their BearkatOneCard.
