UTA ends volleyball winning streak in three

UTA 3 SHSU 0   ARLINGTON -- Paced by Amanda Aguilera's 14 kills, UT-Arlington ended Sam Houston State winning streak with a 25-22 25-19 25-17 victory over the Bearkats Thursday night in Southland Conference volleyball match.

The loss marks the first time Sam Houston has been swept in three sets since Central Michigan knocked off the Kats on Sept. 11. Sam Houston now stands 19-11 for the season and leads the Southland Conference West Division with an 11-2 record.

Carli Kolbe and Camille Alfaro led the Bearkats will 11 kills each. Anna Ferguson added nine. Michelle Miller totaled 29 assists as setter.   UTA posted 41 kills to 39 for Sam Houston.

The Bearkats looked in control in the first set, leading 18-14. But the Mavericks rallied to win 11 of the next 15 points to take the first frame.   The 11-match winning streak was the longest by a Sam Houston State volleyball team since 1993.

The Bearkats continue their road swing with a afternoon match Saturday at Texas State.  Thursday's loss combined with two wins this week by the Bobcats makes Saturday's matchup critical to Sam Houston title hopes.

The Kats lead the West Division by one match as Sam Houston stands 11-2 and Texas State 10-3 in league action. The Bearkats defeated the Bobcats in five sets in their first meeting earlier this season in Huntsville. Central Arkansas leads the East Division with a perfect 13-0 mark. While UCA is not eligible for post-season competition, the Bears can win the regular season title and now hold a two-match lead over Sam Houston in the standings.

Sam Houston will wrap up the 2009 regular season with contests at Central Arkansas and Northwestern next weekend.
