Box Score SAN MARCOS - Texas State took an hour and eight minutes to dispose of Sam Houston State in three sets in a Saturday afternoon Southland Conference volleyball match to move into a tie for first place in the league's West Division race.
Led by Mo Middleton with 13 kills and Jessice Weynand with 12, the Bobcats handed the Bearkats a 25-11 25-17 25-17 loss. Sam Houston drops to 19-12 for the season and 11-3 in Southland Conference action.
Texas State also is 11-3 in league play and 17-12 for the year. Sam Houston closes out the regular season with a pair of road matches at Central Arkansas and Northwestern State next weekend. Both Texas State and Sam Houston already have clinched berths in the 2009 Southland post-season tournament in San Antonio Nov. 20-22 which will decide the league's NCAA tournament representative.
The Bearkats have now had two consecutive three-set losses on the road. Sam Houston had posted an 11-match winning streak prior to this week.
Anna Ferguson led Sam Houston with 10 kills. Michelle Miller picked up 17 assists.
The Bobcat front line dominated the Bearkats, producing 11 blocks to only three for Sam Houston. Amber Calhoun was in on seven of the 11 blocks.
Texas State totaled 39 kills and had only seven errors in 76 attempts to hit .421 as a team. Sam Houston managed only a .011 hitting mean with 22 kills and 21 errors in 95 attempts.
The Bobcats never trailed in the first set. With the score tied 10-10 in the second set, Texas State went on a 9-2 run to pull away. Sam Houston had one early lead in the third set but again, the Bobcats pulled away quickly.
