The Sam Houston State bowling program has taken the next step in the building process of the new program with the announcement of the first signing. Azle High School student Kimi Davidson signed a National Letter of Intent on to compete on the SHSU bowling team. She will receive a scholarship and go down in history as the first inaugural female bowler for the new NCAA Division I bowling program.
"I am very impressed with Kimi's level of experience in the game," said head coach Brad Hagen. "She has a level head on her shoulders and she is open to learning. I chose her because she had many of the qualities I was looking for, and I felt that she would bring a great deal of experience to the team."
Davidson has made an impact at Azle High School, which is located just outside of Fort Worth, for the bowling team and in her academic success. She maintains a grade point average of 3.8 and averages a 200 in bowling. She has been bowling for 12 years and qualified in the 2006, 2008, and 2009 Teen Masters tournament. She has also been the All District State Qualifier and team captain for the last three years.
Hagen is recruiting several women from across the country to compete in the 2010 season. Hagen said he would like to sign seven more athletes this spring.
"I have been looking at a number of girls who I think will fit this team," Hagen said. "They seem to do well athletically as well as academically. I have high hopes that we will crack the top 20, be selected for nationals and hold ourselves to high standards for this season and for the future."
The next signing period will be held in the second week of April. Hagen is expecting to have the rest of the team committed by the end of March and ready to bowl by next fall.
