HARAHAN, La. — Sam Houston made some more noise before being eliminated in round five of the CUSA Bowling Championships at Colonial Lanes on Friday afternoon.
The eighth-seeded Bearkats knocked off No. 11 Tulane 2-0 to stay alive in the competition in round four Friday morning. Sam Houston swept the Green Wave with a 1,030-944 win in traditional play before finishing them off with a 1,110-1,057 take down in Baker play.
Jessica Sillis bowled a team-high 227 in traditional and followed it up with a 247 in the Baker format to go along with a 237 by Breana Chewens.
The Kats continued to battle, pushing No. 4 Nebraska to the limit in round five before eventually losing 1,045-990 in traditional play and by just seven pins in the Baker format 1,086-1,079.
"Today was filled with highs, determination, possibilities and disappointment, but I hope the group can take away from this what we already know and that is they can compete at a high level," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We've proven that again this second half of the season, and I hope we can keep this core together for another ride.
"We battled until the end and pushed Nebraska until the final shot. That's all you can ask for," the coach added. "Could we have done things better in the heat of the moment, yes. However, we need to stay optimistic and hopeful that there will be one more for us. Now we wait and maybe pray a little that it's enough because we are not ready for the season to be over."
Emily Hart turned in the best game in traditional with a 226, and Chewens rolled a 242 in Baker play for Sam Houston, which is looking to earn an at-large berth to an NCAA regional when the field is announced Wednesday.
