NEW ORLEANS - Despite double figure performances by four Bearkats, the Sam Houston State women's basketball team dropped a 71-64 decision to University of New Orleans Friday night at the UNO Human Performance Center.
Ray Alexander led the Bearkats with 16 points, Brittany Brooks added 14, Chanice Smith scored 13 and Whitney Smith totaled 11 as Sam Houston dropped to 3-5 for the season.
Candice McGee scored all 10 of her points in the second half to add to a season-high 16 rebounds to lead New Orleans as the Privateers upped their record to 6-3.
Sam Houston jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Privateers came roaring back with a 12-0 run to go up 14-8. UNO never trailed again, leading 34-30 at halftime and going up by as many as 12 points in the second half.
An Alexander layup cut the UNO margin to three points 53-50 midway through the second half. But the Privateers went on a 9-1 run to go up 61-51.
The Sam Houston State women will take the next week off for final exams. Next action for the Bearkats will be a road game at TCU Sunday Dec. 20.
The Bearkat women's next home game is Tuesday, January 12 when the Kats play host to Texas Southern University at 6:30 p.m.
