Anna Ferguson named Academic All-Southland

Anna Ferguson, Sam Houston State senior middle blocker from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, has been named as a first team selection on the 2009 Academic All-Southland Conference volleyball team.
In her five years as a Bearkat, Ferguson has compiled a 3.46 overall grade point average as an Academic Studies major.
Members of the Academic All-Southland squad are selected by vote of the league's head volleyball coaches, academic coordinators and sports information directors. To be nominated, a student-athlete must produce an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher, be a starter or front line reserve and have attended her university for at least one year prior to the season of competition.
Ferguson was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection this fall after leading the Bearkats to 20 victories (the most by a Sam Houston team since 1996) and a Southland West Division runner-up finish.
She was a three-time Southland volleyball "Offensive Player of the Week" winner and ranked No. 4 in kills and No. 10 in hitting pct. in Southland. Ferguson finished her career ranked No. 8 in all-time blocks (308) and No. 18 in career kills (1,070) .
Academically, she is a member of Golden Key honor society, Kappa Delta Pi Education honor society, a SHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee officer, a Who's Who award recipient, a four-time Dean's List member and three-time President's Honor Roll member.
Four other Bearkats are honorable mention as Academic All-Southland nominees. They are middle blocker Katie Phillips of Spring (3.41 GPA in psychology), middle blocker Kim Black of Huntsville (3.15 GPA in accounting), outside hitter Jamie Kaleh of Magnolia (3.38 GPA in political science) and right-side hitter Courtney Laskowski of Poth (3.72 GPA in mass communication).
