Track team completes final SLC warm-up

Sophomore Dess Meek highlighted action for the Sam Houston State women's track and field team in the Bearkats' final warm-up for the upcoming Southland Conference championship meet.
Sam Houston participated in the Texas A&M Invitational in college station, going up against a field that included last year's indoor and outdoor national champion team Arizona State and this year's No. 1 ranked team Texas A&M.
“There were numerous top 25 teams on men's and women's side at the meet so this was a good experience for many of our young Bearkat track and field athletes as they were introduced to the big time,” SHSU head coach Curtis Collier said. “Dess had another outstanding meet, taking over the Southland Conference lead at 19 feet, 4.5 inches. She now leads the high jump and the long jump on the SLC list.”
Other top women's performances included Kristi Hermes tying for the SLC lead in the pole vault at 11-6.5 and freshman Ambra McCuin's season best of 38-9 in the long jump.
Top men's performances came from DJ Hayes in 400 meters, taking over the Southland Conference lead in 48.01, and redshirt freshman Henry Jordan in the long jump, moving ahead of two teammates and into second on the Southland Conference season best list.
Matt Stephenson set a school record in the rarely run 1000 meter run. Clint Anders, Julius Michael and Joseph Anderson also had outstanding times.
"This was a tune-up meet for next week's SLC Indoor,” Collier said. “We rested those who needed rest and competed those who needed the competitive stimulus. This was a great meet, at a great new indoor track facility, with much national level competition. We are pointing toward our best performances next weekend when we will be fresh and ready to compete at our best because of the reduced training load."
