BATON ROUGE ? Megan Gegen hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the eighth inning to power the Sam Houston State softball team to a 1-0 victory over No. 21 LSU to complete play Sunday for the Bearkats in the LSU Tiger Classic.
Morgan Mikulin limited the Tigers to four hits for the victory in the pitching circle. The Bearkat infield came up with a couple of big outs with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to keep the game in a scoreless tie and force the extra inning.
Sam Houston State now stands 5-3 for the season. The Bearkats will play host to Prairie View A&M in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the Bearkat Softball Complex Tuesday.
Earlier Sunday, Sam Houston lost 2-0 to Ohio State. Buckeye catcher Samantha Mauder hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and pitcher Lindsay Bodeker struck out 11 batters to pace Ohio State.
The Buckeyes picked up their first run in the opening inning after Marder singled to left field. Courtney Pruner tripled to score Marder.
Ohio State won all four of its games in the Tiger Classic to win the tournament title.
Brandi Crnkovic picked up the loss in the pitching circle for Sam Houston, striking out four Buckeyes.
Two Bearkats, senior third baseman Sarah Parich and junior pitcher/designated player Morgan Mikulin, were named to the 2009 LSU Tiger Classic all-tournament team.
