Box Score HUNTSVILLE ? Hailey Wiginton hit a solo home run in the first inning and Ashley Newberry had a two-run double in the fourth to lead Sam Houston to a 5-2 non-conference softball victory over Prairie View A&M Wednesday evening at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Tuesday night's rains forced cancelation of Wednesday's scheduled matchup with Houston Baptist in Houston. The two coaches will talk Wednesday to set a date for rescheduling the game.
Sam Houston State (6-4) rolled up its five runs on 10 hits. Wiginton, Tomi Garrison and Tiffani Woodrum each went 2-for-3 at the plate. The game was played in mist and rain that forced cancelation of the nightcap in what was to be a doubleheader.
Garrison was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, picking up her second win of the year by spreading six hits over seven innings. She struck out one batter and walked two.
Panther pitcher Analisa Gonzalez struck out four Bearkat batters.
Prairie View catcher hit a run-scoring single in the third inning. The Panthers added a run in the top of the seven.
The Bearkats play a road game Wednesday at Houston Baptist, then travel to Waco for a three-game weekend series at Baylor.
