SAN ANTONIO ? Corey Allmond scored 22 points including two free throws with six seconds left in the second extra period as Sam Houston State defeated Texas-San Antonio 89-86 in double overtime.
Barkley Falkner forced the second overtime with a jumper off the glass after an inbounds pass from Drae Murray with less than a second remaining in the first overtime. Falkner went 10-of-11 from the field as he scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Sam Houston trailed by 12 points twice in the second half, but came back to lead by three points before the Roadrunners forced overtime with the score 69-69 at the end of regulation.
Falkner's basket tied the game 79-79 at the end of the first five minutes of overtime. The score was tied twice but Sam Houston never trailed in the second overtime.
Lance Pevehouse added 14 points and Ashton Mitchell scored 13 to give the Bearkats four players in double figures.
The victory keeps Sam Houston tied for first place in the Southland Conference West Division with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, both with 6-1 league records. Sam Houston stands 12-8 for the season.
With 12 turnovers in the first half, the Bearkats trailed by 11 at halftime. Allmond got hot after the break, scoring 18 of his 22 points in the second half and overtime.
"This was our worst first half since the Central Florida game," SHSU head coach Bob Marlin said. "In the second half, we playe and hard, not great, but we made some plays when we needed them. I was proud of our guys and their effort. Barkley was sensational and the player of the game. That shot he made at the end of the first overtime was a designed play. Drae made a great pass and he scored. This was as crazy a game as I have ever been in."
