College Station, TX -- Dess Meek of Sam Houston State placed 11th at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Texas A&M this weekend with a leap of five feet, 8.75 inches.
Meek was unable to clear the next height, 5' 10", in three tries. If the sophomore from Newton could have made the jump, she would have tied for sixth place and earned All-America honors.
"Dess came so close," SHSU head track and field coach Curtis Collier said. "On her third attempt, it look like she was going to make a successful jump, but she just brushed the bar with her achilles and it fell off. This was a great experience for her and, as a sophomore, she'll have more opportunities at the NCAAs."
Meek became the first Sam Houston State track and field student-athlete to earn a berth at the NCAA Indoor championships by clearing 6' 0" at the University of Houston indoor in February. Her school record high jump was the sixth best mark in NCAA Division I women's track and field during the regular season.
Destine Hooker of the University of Texas won the NCAA women's high jump championship with a meet record mark of 6' 6". Meek was one of 16 finalists in the event.
