SAN MARCOS ? Led by first baseman Nick Zaleski who totaled six RBIs in the contest, Sam Houston State rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to tie and eight more in the 10th inning to defeat Texas State-San Marcos 17-10 in a Southland Conference baseball game at Bobcat Field Sunday.
Sam Houston split with the Bobcats Saturday, giving the Bearkats two of three wins in the SLC series and upping SHSU's league mark to 5-1 and the Kats' season record to 13-5.
Second baseman Braeden Riley went 5-for-7 at the plate to lead a Sam Houston team that totaled 20 hits in the game. For the weekend, Riley went 11-for-17 against the Bobcats.
Zaleski, who was 4-for-6 for the day, blasted a two-run home run in the 10th inning and Justin Keathley added a three-run triple. Catcher Mark Wyatt and third baseman Seth Hammock also hit solo home runs.
Three other Bearkats produced multiple hits with Wyatt totaling three hits and Hammock and Tyler Lundy producing two apiece.
The Bearkats used six pitchers in the contest with Sean Weatherford (2-1) picking up the win by throwing the final two innings in relief.
Sam Houston State will play a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Texas Southern in Houston then play host to two-time defending Southland Conference regular season champion Texas-San Antonio in a three game weekend series at Don Sanders Stadium. Game times will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
