Bearkats dominate field events at SFA

The Sam Houston State men's track and field team started the 2009 outdoor season with a bang Friday and Saturday at the Dogwood Relays hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
Chris Cralle highlighted the meet with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 199' 6” to win the hammer. Two other Bearkats qualified for NCAA regionals with Lane Dennis (52.28) winning the 400 meter hurdles and Darryl Hayes (47.04) finishing as the runner-up in the 400 meter dash.
Field event winners included Jon Tipton (168' 7”) in the discus, Chris Gilchrist (48' 9”) in the triple jump, Henry Jordan (22' 8”) in the long jump, Cutter Bernhard (15' 1”) in the pole vault and Chris Nelson (6' 6.75”) in the pole vault.
“For an opening meet, we had alot of positives,” head coach Curtis Collier said. “Freshman Cutter Bernhard won the pole vault after 4 months of rehab on his back. Senior Jon Tipton won his first collegiate meet in the discus against a good field.”
