Home runs by Alex Survant and Sarah Parich and a triple by Hailey Wiginton powered Sam Houston State to a sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference softball doubleheader as the Bearkats won 4-2 and 5-3.
Survant's sixth inning two-run homer broke a 2-2 tie for the winning tallies in the first game. Parich's homer, also a two-run blast, came in the first inning of the second game.
Morgan Mikulin (6-5) was the winning pitcher in the first game and earned her second save of the season in the nightcap. Brandi Crnkovic (6-7) took the victory in the second contest, retiring the first16 Islanders before giving up a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning.
Sam Houston ups its season record to 14-14 and stands 7-7 in Southland action with the victories. The Islanders dropped to 13-25 for the year and 4-12 in league play.
With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning catcher Casie Everitt singled to shortstop and Survant lifted a ball over the right center field fence for the game winner. The hit was Survant's second home run of the season.
Morgan Mikulin (6-5) struck out four Islanders and spread six hits over seven innings for the first win.
Wiginton's triple put the Bearkats on the board in the third inning. Everitt added a second run with a run-scoring single up the middle as Sam Houston took a 2-0 lead.
Islander shortstop Stephanie Estrada doubled to right center and catcher Alaina Byars blasted her sixth home run of the season to tie the contest 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Addie Tallman (10-10) was the loser for the Islanders in the opener.
Parich's two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning got the Bearkats off to a good start in the nightcap. Whitney Wilson put SHSU up 4-0 with a two-run double in the second inning. Calli Wood's two-out single gave the Kats another run in the third frame.
Crnkovic's shot at the third perfect game in Sam Houston softball history ended with a two-run sixth inning. Margo Hurdt added a home run in the top of the seventh. The Islanders ended the second contest with five hits.
Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will complete the three-game series with a 12 noon single game Sunday afternoon.
