Islanders avoid softball sweep with 3-1 win

HUNTSVILLE ? Margo Hurdt's two-run double in the first inning powered Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 3-1 victory over Sam Houston State in the final contest of a three-game Southland Conference softball series Sunday afternoon at Bearkat Softball Complex.

Sam Houston State (14-15, SLC 7-8) won both games in a doubleheader Saturday but the Islanders (14-25, SLC 5-12) avoided a sweep with the victory.

Hurdt's first inning blast to right field scored Stephanie Estrada and Alaina Byars who both singled. Andrea Simancas led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two singles.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Alex Survant got the Bearkats on the scoreboard with an RBI single. The inning marked the only time in the game Sam Houston got a runner past second base.

Casie Everitt and Survant both led the Bearkats at the plate, going 2-for-3 for the day.

Winning pitcher Addie Tallman (11-10) spread six hits over seven innings. While not striking out a single Bearkats, Tallman got 15 ground outs including a double play.

Tomi Garrison (2-3) was the loser for Sam Houston, giving up six hits and two runs in four innings. Morgan Mikulin pitched the final three innings in relief.

Sam Houston's next action is a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Huntsville Tuesday with the University of Houston.
