Regional marks, relay victory highlight track weekend

Chris Cralle threw the hammer a school record and NCAA regional qualifying distance of 205 feet and the Bearkat 4x400 relay took first place with a regional mark of 3:09.37 to highlight weekend action for the Sam Houston State men's track and field team.
Cralle's mark came at the Bayou Classic at Rice University in Houston where he also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 163 feet.
The relay victory came at the Springtime Classic hosted by Texas-El Paso. Members of the winning Bearkat relay squad (and their splits) were Darryl Hayes (46.8), Lane Dennis (47.8), John Thomas (48.4), Michael Courtney (45.8).
Jon Tipton added another NCAA region qualifying mark in winning the discus at UTEP with a toss of 173 feet, nine inches.
John Thomas won the 110 hurdles with a mark of 14.55 seconds.
Three Bearkat women took first places at UTEP. Dess Meek won the high jump with a leap of 5' 7”. Kristi Hermes earned a gold medal in the pole vault with a mark of 11' 7.75.” Tiana Lee won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.21 seconds and was the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 1:02.99
"We are still not at full capacity on both teams but we are making progress toward that end,” SHSU head coach Curtis Collier said. “The men's 4x400 win at UTEP was just an outstanding effort. Michael Courtney ran a superb anchor leg and ran down the anchor from South Plains College. It was really exciting for the crowd, for our team, and for those four guys running on the 4x400 team. I look forward to that kind of grit in competition by all our team as the weeks unfold up to the conference championships in May."
