THIBODAUX, LA ? Run-scoring doubles by second baseman Whitney Wilson and catcher Casie Everitt gave Sam Houston State a 2-1 victory over Nicholls State for a sweep in the Southland Conference softball series Sunday.
With the win, Sam Houston moves into a tie for fifth place with Texas-Arlington. Both hold 15-12 Southland records. The top six finishers in the final regular season standings qualify for the SLC post-season event to be hosted by McNeese State in Lake Charles, LA, in two weeks.
Sam Houston closes the regular season next Saturday and Sunday hosting SLC leader Texas State-San Marcos. Nicholls State takes on second place McNeese State and UTA faces 10th place Southeastern Louisiana.
Brandi Crnkovic (11-11) was the winning pitching, limiting the Colonels to one hit in four and two thirds innings and striking out four batters.. Morgan Mikulin picked up her fifth save of the season, pitching the two and a third innings.
Shortstop Hailey Wiginton led off the first inning with a walk. Wilson and Everitt hit back-to-back doubles to put Sam Houston up 2-0. Kodi Butler's RBI single in the fifth inning accounted for Nicholls State's lone run.
Colonel pitcher Lacey Gros allowed only three hits. Alex Survant produced Sam Houston's other hit with a single. Gros struck out six Bearkats.
