Men post seven first places at Rice meet

HOUSTON ? The Sam Houston State men's track and field team totaled seven first place finishes to highlight action for the Bearkats in the J. Fred Duckett / Rice Twilight meet Wednesday night.
The competition hosted by Rice University was the final regular season meet for the track and field team before the annual Southland Conference Outdoor Championships to be held in Nacogdoches Friday through Sunday, May 8-10.
Darryl Hayes and Michael Courtney finished first and second in the 400 meter dash with respective times of 46.67 and 46.79 seconds.
John Thomas won the 110 meter hurdles with a mark of 14.68. Chris Cralle was the top collegiate competitor in the hammer with a throw of 192' 4”. Chris Gilbert won the long jump with a leap of 25' 2”. Chris Nelson won the high jump at 6' 8.75”. Lane Dennis took gold in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.61 seconds.
Sam Houston State won the 4x400 meter relay with a clocking of 3:12.96.
Four Bearkat men posted NCAA regional qualifying marks including Gilchrist and A. J. Edwards (24' 3.75”) in the long jump, Jay Newman in the 400 hurdles (52.50) and Hayes in the 400 meters.
