LAKE CHARLES, LA ? Tyler Knight's two-run single in the top of the 13th inning powered Sam Houston State to a 13-11 victory over McNeese State and a sweep in the Bearkats' Southland Conference baseball series with the Cowboys.
Knight also had a two-run homer in the Bearkats' five run inning in the top of the 11th inning. McNeese rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 11th to force two more extra innings.
The victory marked the sixth extra inning win for Sam Houston State (18-11, SLC 9-6) this season. With the series sweep, the Bearkats have won four of their last five Southland Conference games.
McNeese State jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning. Ryan Mooney put the Bearkats on the board with an RBI single in the fifth.
Sam Houston tied the contest 6-all with five runs on five hits and two Cowboy errors in the top of the seventh. Adam DeLaGarza and Braeden Riley each hit run-scoring singles and Mark Wyatt, DeLaGarza and Mooney all scored on McNeese miscues.
Tyler Lundy's two-run double with two outs in the top of the 11th gave the Bearkats their first lead of the game. Wyatt doubled to score Lundy and Tyler Knight hit a two-run homer to give Sam Houston an 11-6 lead.
But McNeese rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 12th sparked by a two-run double by Scott Merrill to tie the contest once again.
Will Skelton (2-1) was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, taking the mound in the 12th inning. Dallas Gallant started, going the first six innings. Guillaume Duguay, Ryan Tepera and Matt Shelton saw action in relief.
McNeese State dropps to 13-14 for the season and 5-10 in Southland action with the loss.
Sam Houston will play the Rice Owls in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Reckling Park in Houston.
